For as long as I've been playing guitar, I've felt completely dependent on gain and sustain to be able to solo well. The thought of having to try and play a convincing solo with a more subdued tone gives me nightmares. So how do some players do it? How do they play solos that sound perfectly suited for a tone that's less gainy and sustainy? In this video I'll show you three demonstrations, and then give you some tips for adapting your blues soloing to fit within the constraints of a cleaner tone.

Hi Anthony, Hope y’all are well! Yes this post really resonated with me, I work from home and when playing at home l was able to open up the old Fender pro reverb, but during the pandemic my wife started working from home as well, so I found I was having to play at tv volume a lot and it changed they way I play, much cleaner tones and a more staccato picking sort of vibe. I think it has actually added more depth to my overall style of playing, even going for more funk type things ala Nile Rodgers etc! Nice one bro, your place of work looks great! Cheers
Absolutely, being forced to play cleaner definitely makes you think about what you’re doing a lot more, and having that ability just makes you a more well rounded player. Thanks for the comment!
