Free Lesson Friday Lessons From The Gym: How To Restart Your Guitar Journey

May 17th, 2025

My two least favorite types of emails are from: - People who stopped playing guitar years ago and are struggling to start. - People who are about to put down the guitar because they're too busy.

It's hard for me to relate to either of those because I've never put down the guitar for more than a few weeks at a time in over 30 years of playing. But when it comes to exercise? You bet I can relate.

I have not maintained a single exercise routine that lasted for more than a year since I started uploading lessons to YouTube in 2007. I have given my life to this pursuit, and it has had very negative impacts on my health.

That started to change about 18 months ago. I began to change who I was, and my habits began to change along with it. I have not maintained a consistent workout routine that has survived two surgeries, several bouts with sickness, and the business of family life.

Just to be clear: I have had several periods where I could not work out for several weeks during these 18 months, but the important thing to me is that I came back every time.

I'm going to share the 10 lessons I've learned during this 18-month process, in hopes that it will motivate you to make some potentially hard choices regarding your guitar journey.
