Boogie Blues Rhythms - Vol. 1

Overview

Like many SRV fans, I tried to sink my teeth into the song Rude Mood by SRV but got lost quickly - and that was just on the rhythm. Over the years, I’ve learned quite a bit from that song, but there’s an easier way to get started.

This course is like an on-ramp to the boogie blues highway. I’ll teach you five rhythms that fit into the general style of Rude Mood but at a more reasonable tempo.

Lesson 1 (free): Remember The Swing

Before teaching the 5 rhythms in this course, I want to make sure we're doing the most important thing right. We have to maintain that swinging feel in the rhythm. If we don't establish it at low speeds, it will be easy to overlook at faster speeds.

    Included
    • Lesson Video
  • Rhythm 1

We start with Rhythm 1, a familiar blues rhythm pattern. We'll focus on maintaining the swinging feel since the tempo is faster than we might be used to.

    Included
    • Lesson Video
    • Tablature
    • Backing Track
  • Rhythm 2

For Rhythm 2, we switch to using single notes in our rhythm, playing over a familiar blues boogie pattern.

    • Tablature
    • Backing Track
  • Rhythm 3

For Rhythm 3, we focus on palm muting the "uh" notes of the rhythm we learned in Rhythm 2. We also add in a small bend.

    • Lesson Video
    • Tablature
    • Backing Track
  • Rhythm 4

Rhythm 4 is very close to the actual rhythm of "Rude Mood", but played at a much more manageable speed.

  • Rhythm 5

In Rhythm 5 we add in some chord accents between cycles of the boogie pattern. This small change can really liven up the rhythm.
